F & T   Questionnaire:

Our next featured artist is the incomparable Jisun Beak. Her work truly speaks for itself, and sometimes even whistles, in a language of poetry, humor, and a charming, unexpected and powerful subversiveness. Her sculpture, installation, video, and participatory work comes in through the back door or even the window of your mind. It allows the viewer to truly have an "art experience" -- to encounter something that exists both within and outside of the everyday, rupturing the mundane to reveal new space that you didn't realize existed. She responded to the F & T Questionnaire with the same casual yet profound approach she has in her work, finding the unusual in the real and then leaving us to ponder it.

Describe a place in the world where you have felt most alive:

In the green forest where giant trees are all around me, hearing some birds’ song and the sound of wind and a stream. Where I don’t see any concrete buildings or hear any honking. Or in the middle of the desert where I am completely by myself and there is nothing else in sight.

Share an image that you return to often:

I like this image of a chubby comfy sofa for one person. I often cut out images from magazines or newspapers and it's probably from a furniture magazine. I like its emerald-ish velvet texture and its 4 thin legs. Somehow it looks a chubby bird who doesn't fly, or flies poorly, so he has 4 legs instead of 2 because of his weight.

What is the last thing you read that mattered to you? What will you read next?

I read one book by Freud. It was given to me by a friend who used to be close to me. Actually it’s not the content of the book but a note that she wrote and placed inside five years ago that struck me. It says,

” I spoke too much about myself, Let’s hear about what you’re saying.”

I often try to read this book but I am afraid to because I fear that I’ll find something about myself that she was hinting at in her note.

Describe an object that intrigues you:

A fork. It's a tool that spears something that you want to eat or get. I think that it’s a selfish object.

What must change?

I have been thinking about so many things in terms of the corrupt society in which I live but one issue is that the ‘Recycling System’ in the U.S is a big problem. So many things like paper boxes, plastic bags, wrapping materials (vinyl stuff) are being wasted.

How can we heal?

By sharing good food and having productive conversations with a person who you love.  Sometimes, being completely alone is another way to heal yourself. You could have time to look back at yourself. Or you could buy yourself a beautiful flower, or spend money where you don’t usually.

If you could instantly have any skill or ability what would it be?

If I could instantly have a skill then definitely I would want to be the most talented crazy genius guitar player. Don't ask me why. hahahahaha. Or I would want to be a tennis player who could always make the ACE serve!

What makes you laugh until you cry?

A lot of things have made me laugh non-stop until I cry. One thing recently that made me laugh a lot was THE WORLD’S LARGEST BABY BACK RIB dish that I have ever had in Florida with my Mom and Dad. I have found myself laughing about it while I am home alone. Because of the long drive, we were tired and my Mom and I were arguing about something that I can no longer remember. None of us were in a good mood at the dinner table and we were starving to death at the same time. No one actually spoke until the food was served, but when a waitress brought out the Baby Back Rib Dish, all 3 of us started to laugh out loud. I‘ve never seen my Dad laugh that much. If I am thinking about that memory it still makes me laugh a lot. I am laughing while I am writing this too, hahaha.

As a member of the global community, what is your greatest concern?

Can the world make a perfect system for everyone?

What does it mean to have a better life?

Describe a non-human being you’ve interacted with.

Non physically, a ‘Wind’ which smells like clean laundry.
Physically, these little figures, two little penguins and one little polar bear that I bought in a craft store. I call them ‘my little guys.’ I bought them in Korea for my upcoming expedition to the North Pole as my friends.

What is your mantra?

I would prefer to use the word ‘prayer’ instead of mantra.

If I try to get something, I will lose it.

If I take advantage, I will lose.

            Be humble always!

What can art do?

Art cannot do anything but be something.
